Centuries ago, giant wooden vessels called 'Kettuvalams' (boats tied with ropes) carried spices, grains, and coir across the winding waterways of Alappuzha backwaters. Crafted from massive planks of indigenous wild jackfruit timber (Anjili), each hull was stitched together with resilient coconut coir cords and caulked with natural cashew nut resin in time-honored naval joinery.
